After securing a win against the Garfield Bulldogs, 4-1 overall, with a combined no-hitter on monday, the Gondoliers, 5-0 overall, stay undefeated, today at 6 they will host the LACES Unicorns, 4-3 overall.
Senior Eli Altamirano, a captain alongside seniors Canon King and Noel Moreno, credits their recent wins to their pitching. “Our pitching staff has done an outstanding job of throwing up zeros on the scoreboard,” Altamirano said.
“They’ve also been giving the offense a chance to put up runs on the board and win the game.”
The team has proven to be successful in all aspects. “We’ve been firing on all cylinders offensively and defensively,” said Altamirano.
“Hitting has been coming alive,” Moreno said.
In preparation for today’s game, the boys plan to put pressure on LACES and analyze their defense, and offense in order to quickly capitalize on it, said Moreno.
Moreno emphasizes that the teams need to work together offensively and “get control of the game early,” he said.
One instance of this was their first game against Palisades on February 26th. “We couldn’t get anything rolling early on offense but we found it late in the game,” said Moreno.
But as the season progresses the team continues to make an effort to grow and learn.
“That’s something we did differently against Garfield, we got the offense going early, our pitching was outstanding and our pitchers trusted the defense to make some good plays,” Moreno said.
Altamirano highlights underclassman contributions to the team such as sophomore Jace Lindblom as “he stepped up tremendously this year compared to his freshman year.”
“He’s a big contributor to the team this year,” he added.
